About Our School
Children’s House Montessori is a nurturing space where curiosity is encouraged, independence is fostered, and learning unfolds naturally. Our environment is intentionally prepared to support children 18 months – 6 years old as they grow into confident, capable individuals.
Since opening our doors in 1994, our school has remained committed to nurturing the whole child, guided by the Montessori philosophy and a deep respect for each stage of development.
Rooted in the Montessori method, our classrooms are thoughtfully arranged with hands-on materials that invite exploration and discovery. Children are given the freedom to move, choose, and engage with their work at their own pace, guided by caring educators who observe and support each child’s unique path.
Whether they are learning how to pour water, match letters, or express themselves through art, every experience helps lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. At Children’s House Montessori, we believe education should be joyful, meaningful, and rooted in respect.
Montessori Philosophy
Maria Montessori believed that children learn best when given the freedom to explore within a structured, respectful environment. Her approach, developed through scientific observation, encourages independence, self-discipline, and a sense of purpose, both in and out of the classroom.
At Children’s House Montessori, we honor that vision through thoughtfully prepared classrooms, child-sized materials, and a curriculum designed to engage the whole child. Our goal is to help children grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally, nurturing traits like self-confidence, empathy, and perseverance.
Montessori education is neither a daycare nor a traditional preschool. It is a purposeful, child-led approach that respects the developmental needs of every learner. During the sensitive early years, children absorb information effortlessly when immersed in a calm, engaging environment.
When children are trusted, supported, and inspired, they thrive. They gain not just skills, but a lasting love of learning.
Founder & Director
Barbara Yentes, Founder
Barbara Yentes discovered Montessori education in college and quickly knew it was her calling. After earning her teaching credential and working in public schools for six years, she returned to Montessori and completed her certification through the Montessori World Education Institute.
In 1994, she opened Children’s House Montessori School to provide a nurturing, child-centered space for families in Tulare. She and her husband have lived in Tulare for over 35 years, raising five children—each of whom began their education in the very program she created. Several of their grandchildren have since joined the same loving school community.
Montessori is a lifelong passion for Barbara. In 2020, she co-founded an online Montessori business with her daughters-in-law, supporting families integrating Montessori into daily life. Her work continues to be grounded in growth, peace, and creativity for both children and the broader community.
Briana Avila, Director
Briana Avila is the Director of Children’s House Montessori School, bringing warmth, energy, and over a decade of early childhood education experience. A mother of two active boys and a Tulare resident for over 20 years, she values the close ties between family, school, and community.
Her journey began 13 years ago with a part-time role at CHMS that sparked her passion for working with young children. She went on to earn her degree in Child Development from Fresno Pacific University and her teaching credentials. After 10 years in public education, Briana returned to CHMS in 2022 to step into the role of Director, welcomed by longtime friend and founder Barbara Yentes.
She is dedicated to fostering a school environment where children, families, and staff feel supported, connected, and inspired. With continued training and a heart for Montessori principles, Briana leads with compassion, purpose, and a deep belief in the power of early education.
